1 mnihongo is a fairly clumsy troff post-processor that2 catches unicode characters that might be japanese,3 looks them up in a font file (currently4 /lib/font/bit/pelm/unicode.9x24.font) to get the5 bits, converts that to postscript, and dumps that6 in the output.8 Widths are taken from troff font Jp, which has at9 best a simple approximation to the truth.11 The program itself is normally called implicitly12 by loading the troff macro package -mnihongo, which13 does a .pi command.
